Mobile Health Train

With a team of students of Interior Design, we came together and created a mobile health train that would serve the greater Eastern Washington, in terms of health and dental care. Working with student nurses and dental hygenists, we looked at all parts of this design, and took an interdisiplinary approach.

Having explored many options we found a self propelling train, that we were able to work with, including full drawings, and a train engineer to help answer questions.

Questions that popped up during our design, included; how to fit all these amenities onto a train, that has to be able to move around the state? What is the most useful set up? How to deal with strict size requirements of both the train and the nessesary equipment?

These were our final designs..

Viridian - High-end Accessories Store

The core of this project was to design a high-end accessories store in downtown Toronto, for the compitition at RDI. Running away from the super modern/tech style that is so prevalent these days, I decided for a more luxurious and historical approach.

Finding the Aesthetic Movement, I took the ideas of Oscar Wilde, the motif of the peacock and the idea that everything is art, and applied them to my ideas of design.

This is what I came up with...

This school project was to create a Graphic Design Firms, office space!

Creating a space for creative people in a creative manner was the key idea for this design. Utilizing elements that graphic designers use, such as the pixel were brought into the design in abstracted forms.

Using graphic elements intermixed with pixels are used throughout the design, and the biggest design element of the large zigzag graphic was what brought in the color scheme for the overall design.

3rd Place - WSU Spokane Campus Design

This project was based on designing a 3rd place for students at the WSU-Spokane campus. A 3rd place is where people can go to hangout, that is not home or work but something in-between. We were given a space that has already been built, and had to work within boundaries given. As i was doing research I found pendant lights that were made from recalaimed traffic light lenses. I used these as my inspiration for the space, creating a theme of a place to STOP SLOW and GO. All of the colors, flow of space, and materials pertain to this overall idea.

Painterly Space

Creating a conceptual enviorment for a psychedelic musician to call their retreat, was the goal of this design.
As my inspiration I used Frantisek Kupka's painting, Disks of Newton. This painting utilizes the idea of color theory, and forms created by changes in color.

From this I created my own conceptual model. With this model I played with the idea of light changing the forms and colors that were already in place. From this idea I applied it to the actual space in terms of using stained glass in places where the sun would hit throughout the day, and because of that the shapes would change depending on where the sun was hitting the glass.

All in all, everything about this space relates back to the idea of overlapping colors, sounds and shapes, and how these all work together in various ways.

Pufferbelly Depot, Apadptive Reuse - Cie Goulet

This was a school project based on Adaptive Re-Use of an old Train depot in Pullman, Wa

This project started with a photograph of train wheels, from that I developed a concept of curved and straight lines, complementing each other through contrast.
The train depot was built in the 1900’s, and was to be turned into a residence for a local artist, along with a gallery and artist studio. The artist I chose was Cie Goulet who creates paintings through the art of printmaking.
In this design I wanted to create a craftsman style home for her and her blind spouse. There are also many other examples of this residence being a craftsman home, such as the built in cabinetry, window seats and the lantern style chandeliers. Within the home I also used the idea of complimenting circular and angled lines in the floor plan and in the space itself.

Inspiration to Concept: Process Work

Inspiration:

Module:

Concept Model:

Textile:

A photograph of train wheels was the inspiration for this entire project. The straight ridgidity of the lines contrasting with the circular pattern of the wheels was intriguing and became my primary focus. The way that these shapes work together through contrast creates a certain harmony that is very harmonious.
Going from a small drawing to an actual pattern was tricky, I wanted to create something unique. I think that by using the module in straight lines, but using the circles also in contrast follows my concept well. The module demonstrates how circular and direct lines work together simultaneously. For the concept model, a circular base was applied, then to incorporate the straight lines into the form, there are square boxes surrounding the circle. Inside each box there are also small swirls that keep with the idea of the curve and square. By using materials that are natural, support the artist who is a painter of natural landscapes.

Using the model created earlier, a textile was next in being created. The textile the pattern incorporates the idea of the straight and curved line.
